The GGR is not modeled after any specific railway, though it takes inspiration from several, including railways in North Wales, the Great Western Railway, and the Southern Railway's Lynton & Barnstaple line. This eclectic mix of influences can be seen in the photos in the gallery, which showcase rolling stock, locomotives, and buildings from a variety of eras and railways. Like many modern preservation railways, the GGR uses available resources to create a charming hodgepodge of railway history. More than anything, the railway reflects my own interests and is limited only by my imagination and funds.
The track itself is built to two foot narrow gauge scale using Peco 32mm track, which represents two feet at a scale of 16mm to one foot. The approximately 350 foot track loops continuously around my back garden, crossing bridges, passing under the patio, and winding through a shed. Large sweeping curves carry the track around trees and bushes in one unbroken circuit featuring a couple of stations. Building the railway has been tremendously enjoyable (though it remains a work in progress) and operating it even more so.
The railway blends into the garden rather than dominating it, enhancing the space for the whole family to enjoy. If you are considering building a garden railway yourself, I hope some of the information shared here proves helpful. Please feel free to contact me through the website and I will happily provide any additional details.
